A new study* has revealed that high-fat diets, such as the Paleo and Atkins diet, correlates with increased rates of cancer, in particular, colon cancer.
A high fat diet, for the purposes of this study was deemed to be over 60%, and whilst a typical Western diet is about 20-40% fat, many are exceeding this.
Healthy mice were put on the high fat diet for 12 months, during which time they gained more weight than those on a normal diet. But additionally their intestinal cells showed distinctive changes.
The American scientists discovered that the high fat levels caused the cells in the intestinal lining to become more susceptible to cancerous tumors.
Although previous research has shown a link between high-fat diets and cancer risks, this one is the first to show exactly why this is the case in the colon.
